Alcamo

        Alcamo wood is a fine pine forest of 360 hectares (900 acres). It starts at a height 550 metres above sea level and goes up to 835 metres above sea level, that is to say to the topp of Mount Bonifato mount, one of mountains in the chain of calcareous massifs without much vegetation.

        It is all that is left of an ancient spontaneous cork oak wood which has gradually disappeared. In the 1950's, to stop the degradation of the mountain, the Forestry Commisiion started exstensive tree planting, mostly of pines.

        The fauna is alsa protected, and the area is now rich in sedentary fauna; some rare species of bird of the falcon family are present.

        Alcamo wood is open to everybody and can easily be reached via a road which starts from Alcamo village and goes up the north side of Mone Bonifato, through the magnificent pine forest.

        From the topp of the mountain there is a really fineview, and here one can also see the remains of a medieval castle and the evocative Madonna dell'Alto chapel.
